A hard game for Cary's second team against a very strong Chard side.

The game was particularly aggressive with Chard's forwards dominating the game up front. Cary struggled with an untried pack for the first half, but as the game continued it started to come together for them. In the last quarter of the first half they pulled a try back — thanks to the pure determination of Ray Holder.

Although trailing by 30 points at the half-time whistle, Cary were confident that Chard were tiring and that they could rescue the scoreline in the second half. However, Cary had not counted on their opponents being able to field nine substitutes against their own two.

This was a deciding factor in the second half with Cary having to work hard to keep up with the fresh players. Even so, the notable try of the game was scored by George Dampier (who ran it in from Cary's 22-yard line to score in the opposite corner).

When asked for his view on the game, captain Steve Armson commented: "Chard are a large club. Whichever team they put on the field they always have a huge pool of experienced players from which to draw. This always proves a challenge for a small club like Cary, but it was an excellent game — played with good spirit and sportsmanship."
