With the conditions suited more to water polo than rugby, it was never going to be a fast and furious game, particularly since the first one of the New Year saw a few Cary players in different positions to those that they were used to.

However, this didn't faze the hosts, notably Matt Knight who made his debut as second row from open-side flanker.

Cary opened the scoring with their captain, James Atkins (playing at Number 8), picking up and driving over from the base of the scrum. Ben Snook failed to convert.

With handling errors from both teams, scrummaging was on the cards for much of the game. However, the new laws in the engagement of the scrum proved difficult, seeing some of the veteran front row players struggling to change their ways.

Cary scored again towards the end of the first half, then let in a weak try for the visitors on the stroke of half time. After the break, and with the slope on their side, Cary applied pressure for Atkins to score again, converted by Alex Leigh.

Freddie Loxton and Alex Leigh also secured a try apiece, to settle the score at 22–5. Man of the Match was James Atkins.
