CCRFC v Morganians

Morganians travelled to Cary with only 14 men — one of whom, at retirement age, received admiration from his fellow players for his performance at No 8.

At the start of the match it looked to be a day for good rugby until five minutes into play when the heavens opened. The visitors took full advantage of the difficult conditions by playing a forward-orientated game, keeping it tight with Cary defence holding up to the pressure for twenty minutes before eventually being let-off with a kick at the posts. In turn, Cary switched on to the game, using their fitter team to out-pace Morganians, only to be stopped five metres short of the try line. With a tap-penalty 20 metres out, James Atkins drove through the Morganian defence and got hauled down 10 metres short, but good support from inside centre Rick Gates got Cary over the line, only for Gates to have the ball knocked from his hands.

After the break and facing downhill, Cary used the elements to their advantage. Points were secured by the hosts following a good run from replacement scrum-half Dave Nash and a neat pass to Atkins, who dived over the try line.

From the restart Cary began to dominate in all the aspects of the game. The second try came from a line-out ball fed off the top, with Seb Dyer in great support and feeding the ball to fly-half Ben Snook, who subsequently secured the conversion.
