Castle Cary Rugby Football Club

Colin Hughes

What an exciting and eventful season we had last year. Our first team finished third in their league; our second team finished mid-table in theirs. We also had success at county level from six of our Youth players, and our Under 8s won the Warminster tournament and brought back silverware. We hosted a fantastic 15s tournament in August, organised by club coach Jerry Davies, and a brilliant 7s tournament in May, where we attracted 16 teams, male and female from across the country. The event raised several thousand pounds for the Club and Macmillan Cancer Support. Well done to all those who contributed to making last year one of our most successful.

This year's 1st XV will be headed up by Tom Hemsworth. Tom has been with the Club for many years, has the respect of the players, and was a popular choice for captain. Tom Pullen, another longstanding player, will head up the seconds, with Chris Sadd as vice-captain. I wish both teams and captains every success for the season. I wish to convey my thanks to Paul Hoggett, who will stand down as captain this year to focus on another sport that he's very keen on! He has been an outstanding skipper and has achieved good success with the team. I would also like to thank Andy Gibbens and Jerry Davies, who have brought some good coaching techniques and ideas to the squads.

Off the field, we are doing well with our fundraising for the new clubhouse but we have more to do! If anyone has any ideas on how we can raise this much needed money, then please let us know. The plans for the new club are on display in the clubhouse. Come down and see them, watch the game, support your team and club and have a few drinks. I'll look forward to seeing you down at the ground.
